Abstract
Increasing poverty and concentration of wealth will affect the needs of social work clients, the delivery of services, and the role of social welfare in U.S. society. Poverty, unemployment, and changing family structures present social workers with new and increasingly severe problems. A global economy, which results primarily from the growth of multinational corporations, concentrates wealth and makes it unavailable for social needs. An internationalist perspective is necessary to develop strategies and policies appropriate for the new economic and social structures. Social workers must guard against service cutbacks, develop new programs, and focus practice on social action. Keywords
