Succinoylcholine Iodide (Celocurin): A Synthetic Drug with a Curare-like Effect.

Abstract
Succinyl- choline (SCh) and phenylsuccinylcholine (PhSCh) exhibit brief curare-like action, paralyzing the skeletal muscles. The hydrolysis of SCh in media of various pH''s and in the presence of cholinesterase from cobra venom was studied. Breakdown of SCh is prevented by cholinesterase inhibitors such as prostig-mine. SCh is broken down much more slowly than acetylcholine. Cholinesterases of blood and of the neuromuscular end-plate are considered as chiefly responsible for the inactivation of SCh. Cholinesterase is not greatly inhibited by SCh and has about the same affinity for SCh as for acetylcholine.
