Abstract
Endocrine therapy plays a part in the treatment of carcinoma of the prostate whose importance is well attested by clinical and laboratory experience. Much has been learned since the original laboratory and clinical observations, 14 years ago, of Charles Huggins1on the effect of castration on the carcinomatous prostate; the independent report of Arbor Munger2on the effect of castration by radiation therapy; and the report by William Herbst3on the favorable effect of estradiol and diethylstilbestrol on carcinoma of the prostate. Yet, despite this large volume of literature, many of the essential factors are little understood. The complete eradication of cancer of the prostate can only be accomplished by early detection, prior to manifestation of symptoms, and radical surgical removal of the prostate with its capsule and the seminal vesicles with the capsule. Happily, the group of patients so treated is becoming larger since the examinationKeywords
