Comparative studies of ‘bile salts’. 6. Partial synthesis of coprostanic acid, a ‘stem acid’ of primitive bile salts

Abstract
Cholanic acid was converted by a malonic ester synthesis to coprostan-26-oic acid. The intermediates and by-products of this partial synthesis were isolated and characterized. Coprostanic acid was shown to be identical with the C27 stem acid previously made from the bile salts of Crocodylidae; it should be a useful reference compound.
