An Emergence Container for Recovering Southern Pine Beetles from Infested Bolts

Abstract
More than 95% of the southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalls, present were collected from infested pine bolts confined to an emergence container, a trash can, modified by soldering a copper tube at the top, and a copper tube and a modified funnel at the base. The funnel bears a mason jar into which the emerging photopositive adults gather. This modified trash can also make an excellent rearing chamber for southern pine beetles. Up to a 10-fold increase in numbers was achieved in preliminary experiments when 30-50 adults/sq. ft. of bark surface were confined in it with untreated fresh bolts.
