Relapse of Hyperprolactinemia Revisited

Abstract
Ten years ago, we reported in the Journal1 that about 50 percent of women with prolactin-secreting pituitary microadenomas had a recurrence of hyperprolactinemia during follow-up lasting 5 to 10 years after successful adenomectomy. These women had no radiologic evidence of tumor recurrence, and some were asymptomatic. However, the rate of growth of microprolactinomas may be very slow. We therefore studied retrospectively 57 women with microprolactinomas who underwent successful transsphenoidal adenomectomy between 1970 and 1983 whom we were able to follow for at least 10 years (22 were included in our previous report1). Postoperatively, all 57 women had normal plasma prolactin concentrations (<20 μg per liter), restoration of menses, and cessation of galactorrhea. Twenty-seven had a total of 40 normal pregnancies during the follow-up period.
