Abstract
Current classifications of lampreys as reflected in this symposium are incongruent and unnecessarily split. It is suggested that modern lampreys be classified in one family, three subfamilies, and six genera. Most species are in a single genus Lampetra consisting of six subgenera. Intraspecific variation in dentition is greater than recognized previously. Reasons are given for use of the stem Petromyzont- for suprageneric names based on Petromyzon.Key words: taxonomy, terminology, morphology, lampreysKeywords
