Abstract
General practice is in a unique position in this country for promoting health (Gray and Fowler, 1984; Fry and Hasler, 1986). Over 98% of the population is registered with a general practitioner. There are a million consultations with general practice in the United Kingdom each day. Two-thirds of the practice population consult their doctor within a one year period and nine-tenths within a five year period. This presents a unique opportunity for preventing illness and for promoting health.
