The Drug and Alcohol Curriculum at Flinders School of Medicine

Abstract
The development and current organisation of alcohol and drug education at the Flinders University School of Medicine is described. As well as didactic and clinical teaching within the various disciplines, such as pharmacology, two electives are offered on alcohol‐related problems. One of these, “Alcohol and its effects”, has been offered since the inception of the School and is taken by 40% of students. It is acknowledged that the elective nature of these courses is something of a weakness and that more attention should be paid to misuse of prescribed and illegal drugs. There is also a need for a core training programme at postgraduate level.
