Abstract
We develop a realistic model of directional solidification of a binary-alloy. We analyze the model in a one-dimensional (thin-film sample) geometry and find that the solidification interface undergoes a transition from a planar interface to a smooth cellular interface. We investigate the nature and stability of these states as functions of the parameters of the model. We find that smooth cellular states only exist close to the marginal stability point. Keywords
