Abstract
The islands of Japan make up one of the most thoroughly studied island arcs in the world. Their earthquakes, volcanic activity, and other phenomena, accompanied by the present‐day plate subduction, are intensively monitored, and the evolutionary history of the arc is well documented by abundant geophysical and geological observations. However, the formation process of the Japan Sea, which separates the Japanese islands from the eastern edge of the Asian continent, is still not very well understood. Keywords
