The Measurement of Offshore Shingle Movement

Abstract
The objective was to obtain quantitative data on the movement of shingle under wave action in water depths of about 10 to 20 m by tracking pebbles tagged with radioactive material. The paper describes the method of tagging, the method of position fixing, and the development of an underwater detection vehicle with a wide field of view. The field tracer tests demonstrated both increased mobility with decreasing depth and the existence of a small landward movement of shingle inshore of a depth of 12 m. Existing predictive data on the threshold of movement under waves, based on the results of previous work in the laboratory, was confirmed.
