ISOLATION OF A DRY VARIANT FROM A MUCOID STRAIN OF CRYPTOCOCCUS NEOFORMANS AND PRELIMINARY COMPARATIVE STUDIES

Abstract
A small capsulated variant was obtained by exposure to Wescodyne, 40 ppm, for 10 minutes. On intravenous inoculation of the variant strain white Swiss mice developed central nervous symptoms in 7 - 12 days showing multiple small cystic areas filled with organisms with little reaction in the surrounding tissue. Mice inoculated with the parent strain developed CNS symptoms in 14 - 120 days showing multiple necrotic areas with a dense inflammatory infiltrate containing many mononuclear cells but few organisms. The 2 strains differed in their capacity to stimulate antibody formation in rabbits.
