Abstract
Public pressure for the development of geriatrics as a specialty has been met by relative apathy on the part of the medical profession. Five roles are identified for the geriatrician: physician to a geriatric facility, personal physician to the aged, consultant, teacher, and researcher; and the problems of each are discussed. An attempt is made to relate the public needs and expectations with reasonable responses given the nature and requirements of current medical practice. Although analysis and solutions are offered, the main objective is to open a dialogue which will more precisely define public expectations and appropriate professional responses. Keywords
