Dimethyltin dihalide complexes and their infrared spectra

Abstract
Dimethyltin dichloride and dibromide form crystalline salts containing the ions Me2SnX3 as well as Me2SnX4 2–. The infrared spectra of the former are consistent with the methyl groups occupying equatorial rather than apical position of a trigonal bipyramid. The spectra of complexes Me2SnX2,2L indicate the methyl groups to be in trans octahedral positions, with the remaining ligands in cis positions when X = Cl and L = pyridine or triphenyl-phosphine oxide.
