Abstract
Differentiation of constraints that appear in differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) has been advocated for many purposes, ranging from index reduction for numerical purposes to systems inversion in control theory. In this paper, the numerical and analytic consequences of such differentiations are studied and criteria are established for when difficulties can occur. Keywords
