A Note on Atmospheric Iodine and Its Absorption in Man

Abstract
A simple method for monitoring atmospheric I is described. Levels in the outside air ranged from 0 to 7.4 [mu]g/m3. The question of I absorption from the air was studied by comparing a group of male laundry workers exposed to elevated levels of atmospheric I with a matched group of outside workers. Urinary I excretion, serum inorganic I (SII), salivary I secretion rate and salivary flow were significantly higher in laundry workers. It is concluded that I in the atmosphere is absorbed in man, but this study does not delineate the portal of entry. The possible significance of this finding is discussed.
