Vegetative Reproduction in Western Ironweed

Abstract
The apex of western ironweed (Vernonia baldwini Torr.) vegetative bud shoots adheres to the tunica-corpus theory. Two layers of cells with the plane of wall formation anticlinal to the main axis (tunica) lie over a body of tissue with no pattern to wall formation (corpus). The bud shoot can be divided into the promeristem, the zone of elongation, and a zone of maturation on the basis of histology. It is suggested that the promeristem may be the seat for dormancy mechanisms in western ironweed and that future investigations be concentrated on this site. There was no evidence of a structural barrier to translocation separating the rhizome and bud shoot.Keywords
