Abstract
Recognition of infantile lobar emphysema as the cause of respiratory distress in infancy is primarily a problem of roentgen diagnosis. Roentgen examination of the chest reveals a distended lobe compressing adjacent lung and displacing the heart and mediastinum to the opposite side. Two cases of infantile lobar emphysema are reported in which the emphysematous lobe was fluid-filled, causing a hazy density in the involved area on the chest roentgenogram. The origin of the fluid is not determined, but aspiration of amniotic fluid is considered as a possibility. The roentgen diagnosis of infantile lobar emphysema should be based on signs of overdistention, not hyperlucency of the lobe. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
