Abstract
In this paper a process based model of bacterial dynamics in a river is developed. It is suggested that such models may be of value in relation to the management of catchments where the waters are destined for potable supply. To do this we draw upon the results of previous papers to identify those factors that have a bearing on the development of the model. The elements of the model are then specified and the rationale for particular aspects of the structure is discussed. Sample output is provided to demonstrate that the model is capable of simulating some of the bacterial conditions for which data exist. Finally, conclusions are drawn in respect of (1) those areas of research that would be most effective in refining the model and (2) the situations where the model might be applied. Keywords
