Boston: The Incomplete Transformation

Abstract
THE LAST 30 YEARS have been a period of great change for Boston. The periods before and after the 1960s present sharply different images (Banfield, 1965; Ganz, 1987; Doolittle, Jackson, Masnick & Clay, 1982; Thernstrom, 1969; Clay, 1989a). The Boston that Banfield wrote about in the mid-1960s faced population decline; the new Boston has some recent population growth. Old Boston saw a decline in its middle-income population; new Boston has experienced a growth in its middle-income and upper-income populations. Boston's former in-migrants were mainly blacks from the South; new Bostonians are newly arrived Southeast Asians, Irish, and South and Central Americans.
