Abstract
Spectroscopic measurements have been made to compare the structure of a gas-tungsten arc burning on a molten anode with one burning on a water-cooled anode. Metal vapour emanating from the molten-anode pool can be detected in the arc column near the anode, with concentrations as high as 2500 parts per million. However, it is found that the presence of the metal vapour does not significantly influence the temperature distribution in the arc. Keywords
