Abstract
HPLC column performance is shown to be unaffected by the finish of the column tube. This finding is in direct contradiction to the commonly held belief that using a polished column tube will enhance performance by minimizing the wall effect. Stainless-steel column tubes with five different finishes of 4- to 10-, 16-, 25-, 32-, and 45- to 60-microinch wall were packed with 5-μ spherical, reversed-phase media. Efficiency and peak-symmetry values were statistically identical for all columns.
