Abstract
The growth of the ‘sociohistorical’ approach to human development in the USSR and the USA is discussed in terms of their cross-cultural theorizing and research. The key idea in common between these schools is that culture plays a crucial, mediating, role in the process of human development. Differences between approaches are described and an optimistic summary of future development is proposed. Keywords
