A model of the population dynamics of salps in coastal waters of the Ligurian Sea

Abstract
A model of the population dynamics of saips is presented. This model is unique in that its parameters (reproduction, transfer and mortality rates) are based on physiological functions (feeding, excretion) determined experimentally in previous studies. It takes into account the simultaneous effects of temperature and food concentration. It shows the mean trend of the annual variation and population dynamics of Salpa fusiformis (Cuvier) in the coastal shallow waters of Villefranche-sur-Mer (Mediterranean). It can also be used as a tool to plan further studies: the results of its dynamics allow us to define better sampling programs in the field, and a sensitivity analysis suggests the experiments to be performed in the laboratory.
