Transitions in Cochlear Action Potentials Recorded from the Ear Canal in Man

Abstract
Several investigations on action potentials (AP) from the human cochlea show a knee—point in the amplitude function and a “jump” in the latency function in the intensity near 80 dB p.e. SPL. In the present work we report the results from recordings of AP from the ear—canal in 8 normally hearing persons, in response to a click—stimulus in 2.5 dB steps in the intensity range 95—70 dB p.e. SPL. It is shown that the latency function consists of a transition between the latencies of two “peaks” (“N1” and “N2”) in the AP. The transition takes place near 85 dB p.e. SPL, where the amplitude of “N1” is diminishing in relation to the amplitude of “N2”. From this we conclude that the degree in which the different components contribute to the AP are dependent upon intensity. The present results together with related results found in the literature are discussed, and we put up the theory that the different components of the AP are generated at different locations along the cochlear partition. Flere undersøgelser af aktionspotentialet (AP) fra hørenerven hos mennesket har vist, at man ofte finder en diskontinuitet ved et intensitetsniveau omkring 80 dB p.e. SPL af de anvendte “click”—stimuli. Denne diskontinuitet viser sig ved dels en œndret potentialeform, dels et knœ—punkt i amplitudefunktionen og dels et spring i latenstidsfunktionen. I det foreliggende arbejde er AP registreret fra øregangen hos 8 normalt hørende. Der er anvendt et “click”—stimulus i intensitetsspring på 2,5 dB i området 95—70 dB p.e. SPL. De opnåede resultater viser, hvorledes latenstidsfunktionen består af en overgang mellem latenstiden af 2 “spidser” (“N1” og “N2”) i aktionspotentialet, idet amplituden af “N1” ved ca. 85 dB p.e. SPL bliver mindre end amplituden af “N2”. Herudfra konkluderes, at graden af hvor meget de enkelte komponenter indgår i aktionspotentialet er intensitetsafhœngig. En speciel del af undersøgelsen viser, at dette overgangsfœnomen er uafhœngigt af polar itet og frekvensindhold af det benyttede stimulus. Udfra en diskussion om de her opnåede resultater samt beslœgtede undersøgelser, der er beskrevet i litteraturen, opstilles en teori om, at aktionspotentialets forskellige komponenter genereres forskellige steder langs basalmembranen i cochlea.Keywords
