WORLDWIDE COLLECTION AND EVALUATION OF EARTHQUAKE DATA. EVALUATION OF 1963 SEISMICITY

Abstract
Seismic activity in 1963 is documented and compared to 1960 and other years. Other studies undertaken over the past three years are reviewed and summarized. The worldwide level of seismicity in 1963 is shown to have been considerably lower than in 1960. Comparison with Gutenberg and Richter's (1954) data shows 1963 seismic activity about average with respect to total shocks M sub S greater than or equal to 6.0. However, more shocks in the range 5.0 less than or equal to M sub S 6.0 were recorded in 1963 than predicted by Gutenberg and Richter (1954). Epicenter maps showing events for which M sub S greater than or equal to 4.0 and m sub b greater than or equal to 4.0 for shallow and normal focus and also for intermediate and deep focus events are included. A seismicity map based on annual numbers of shocks (5.0 less than or equal to M sub S 6.0) per unit area is also shown.
