Abstract
While the rhetoric of social work education supports social development, the reality of practice makes it difficult for social workers to implement these ideas. In the Asian and Pacific region—diverse in social, cultural, political, economic and educational factors—social work education and practice are very varied, and common themes must he related to this diversity. The emerging commitment to curricula based on a social development approach must now be supported by strategies which can be shown to overcome the constraints of local contexts, agency and governmental policies and individual professional goals.
