Abstract
To the Editor: The letter from Dr. Klein in the May 22 issue1 illustrates common points of confusion about the definition of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) used by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As Dr. Klein points out, the definition may lead to the misclassification of some patients as not having AIDS if they have certain other causes of underlying immunodeficiency coexisting with infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, or HTLV-III/LAV).2 Thus, patients undergoing dialysis who are receiving corticosteroid therapy for autoimmune renal disease and recipients of renal allografts, who are taking drugs to suppress rejection would not . . .Keywords
