Abstract
ENDOCARDITIS caused by Histoplasma capsulatum is rare. Only 14 cases with complete necropsy have been recorded to date.1-14 Two other patients with Histoplasma endocarditis have been cited in the literature; one of these recovered following therapy with amphotericin B.15 the other patient's necropsy was limited to an examination of the heart.16 Prior to this writing, a prosthetic valve of the heart has never been reported to be the site of fungal endocarditis. It is the intent of this report to present the clinical and pathological findings in two patients with Histoplasma endocarditis, one of whom had his disease originating on a cardiac valve prosthesis. The observations derived from study of these patients are correlated with those of the earlier documented cases of Histoplasma endocarditis.
