Genetic Correlations between Some Economically Important Traits in Swine1

Abstract
Genetic correlations between growth rate and: (1) feed efficiency, (2) litter size, and (3) weaning weight were estimated using data collected at four branches of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. All three estimates obtained in this study were statistically non-significant. No antagonistic genetic correlations that would hinder progress from selection were found. The magnitude of the correlation between growth rate and litter size, 0.06, suggests that these two traits are genetically independent. Correlations between growth rate and feed efficiency, −.22, and growth rate and weaning weight, 0.47, suggest that selection for one should evoke a desirable correlated response in the other.
