Abstract
The importance of leisure lies in what it adds to the quality of life: people's leisure experiences can only be compared in qualitative terms. The home-based mother of young children may regard as work the labour of bringing them up, but her developing family relationships mean that leisure and work may be going on simultaneously. With fewer people in employment and technology enabling more paid work to be done at home, more people will be home based. A reappraisal of the meaning of women's lives, including their sources of enjoyment, might give some insight into future possibilities. Keywords
