Infared investigation of water structure in desalination membranes

Abstract
Studies of the water structure in desalination membranes yield a hypothesis for the desalination mechanism in membranes; the liquid-like water structure must be prevented. In these membranes a weaker H-bond system than in bulk water was observed. This weak hydrate structure reduces ion solubilities and favours a good water flux. Cellulose acetate, polyimide and porous glass membranes have been studied in the i.r. fundamental and overtone regions. Investigation of the two phase formation of polyethyleneoxides supports the i.r. results.
