The metabolism of glutamic acid in germinating green gram seeds

Abstract
Metabolism of uniformly C14-labelled glutamic acid during germination of green gram seeds was investigated. A very rapid catabolism was noted, along with strong presumptive evidence for synthesis of glutamic acid. The major portion of radioactivity of the glutamic acid metabolized is recovered in CO2 given off during germination. Aspartic acid and asparagine are important products of glutamic acid degradation. A slight conversion of glutamic acid into arginine and into proline has been noted. By the use of C14-labelled glucose, evidence for the synthesis of glutamic acid from carbohydrates during germination has been noted. The rapid degradation and extensive synthesis of glutamic acid during germination clearly indicate its high metabolic activity in germinating seeds.Keywords
