STUDIES ON THE VISCERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Abstract
The authors studied visual effects of distention of the stomach or colon by balloons, with themselves as subjects. They found a reflex disturbance of vision with blurring of near objects. This was not caused by ametropia, heterophoria, or change in intra-ocular tension, but by ciliary muscle hypotonia and reflex retinal congestion and edema. After a 15[long dash]20 min. period of distention the ophthalmoscopic picture resembled a mild case of clinical retinal edema.
