Distribution of dark matter in the Perseus cluster, and mass distributions in the Coma and Ophiuchus clusters

Abstract
Data obtained with a coded mask X‐ray spectral imaging telescope (XRT) built at Birmingham, England and flown on the Spacelab 2 mission constitute the first high quality spectral imaging observations of clusters of galaxies in the hard X‐ray band (2.5–25 keV). The spectral imaging properties of the XRT allow the plasma temperature as a function of radius to be determined in larger, brighter clusters, and high quality data have been obtained for the Perseus, Coma and Ophiuchus clusters. Since the observed spectral images are instrumentally smeared projections of the three dimensional distributions in the cluster, a model fitting procedure has been adopted to determine the true temperature and density distributions of the gas. We have performed a detailed analysis of the properties of the intracluster gas in Perseus, and derive the distribution of the mass components in the cluster. Work is in progress on the Coma and Ophiuchus clusters.
