Abstract
In the oxidation of gaseous butanone the reaction rate increases with time from an initially small value to a maximum. The growth of rate in the early part of the reaction is exponential in form. Analysis for ketone shows that the consumption of butanone runs closely parallel to the increase of pressure. During the induction period peroxides accumulate and the rate of reaction is proportional to peroxide concentration. The formation of peroxides is greatly accelerated by the addition of a trace of acetaldehyde. Keywords
