Abstract
On Au buffer layers with (001) and (111) planes, Fe/Au superlattice films were prepared by ultrahigh vacuum evaporation. Prior to investigation of Fe/Au superlattices, the structure of Au buffer layers, which significantly influences the structure of superlattices, was studied. The epitaxial growth of Fe(001)/Au(001) layers on a Au(001) buffer layer and that of Fe(110)/Au(111) layers on a Au(111) layer were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The films with the two stacking orientations have considerably different surface magnetic anisotropies. Keywords
