(Third of Three Parts)Integrated Regulation of VentilationIn the previous sections we have analyzed two of the major components of the respiratory control system: the sensors, and the central controller. In this section we shall discuss the relations between ventilation and various stimuli. In normal man ventilation is stimulated by hypercapnia, hypoxemia and acidemia. Quantitative descriptions of and the mechanisms for the acute ventilatory responses to these stimuli are well known.
