Abstract
The overall objective of this project is to use Molecular Genetics to develop strains of bacteria with enhanced ability to remove sulfur from coal, and to obtain data that will allow the performance and economics of a coal biodesulfurization process to be predicted. The work planned for the current quarter includes the following tasks: isolation and analysis of mutations, cloning of 4S'' genes, analysis of cloned DNA, and use of molecular genetics to increase the selective pressure for the isolation of desulfurization-competent microorganisms. Work performed during this quarter is reported under two topics: development of genetic techniques, and biochemical analysis of desulfurization-proficient and desulfurization-deficient strains of IGTS8. 1 fig., 3 tabs. Keywords
