During pancreatectomies performed under amytal anesthesia there is a constant blood sugar level and a decrease in N excretion. The blood sugar rise which begins within 2 hrs. after the operation shows the regulatory action of a constant insulin supply. A similar early effect on sugar metabolism is indicated from the calculation of sugar mobilized in the body. The N rise in the first 6-9 hrs. is similar to that in the control laparotomies. Following the appearance of glycosuria in 6[long dash]12 hrs. at a renal threshold of 0.15-0.24%, sugar and N excretion increases, reaching a maximum about the 21st hour, then gradually declining. The highest D:N ratios occur about the 15th-18th postoperative hour. Thus there is an early and rapid elimination of stored carbohydrate.
