THE USE OF ACTH AND CORTISONE IN THE TREATMENT AND IN THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF MALIGNANT EXOPHTHALMOS: A PRELIMINARY REPORT

Abstract
On the basis of observations in 9 patients, some studied for as long as 2 yrs., in whom exophthalmos in association with known or suspected thyroid disease was the presenting feature, the admn. of large amts. of ACTH and cortisone resulted in significant decrease in the exophthalmos and improvement in the symptoms associated therewith. In some patients very prolonged intensive therapy was necessary in order to maintain improvement. One patient with a retrobulbar tumor failed to show any improvement on ACTH.
