Abstract
The effect of elimation of various segments of the sympathetic chain on esophageal sensation to balloon distention was studied on 2 groups of patients. In one group bilateral removal of D4 to L3, inclusive, and the 3 splanchnics was investigated. In the 2d group ganglia of D1 to D3 had been put out of action by bilateral cervico-dorsal ganglionectomy or novocaine infiltration. In one patient the whole of the sympathetic system had been eliminated. It was not possible to detect any change in the ability of the patient to perceive esophageal distension by inflated balloons. The sympathetic system appears to play no part in the sensation felt when the esophagus is distended. Keywords
