Analysis of reduced chirping of semiconductor lasers for improved single-mode-fibre transmission capacity

Abstract
It is shown that direct modulation of semiconductor lasers yielding optical pulses with an exponential shape corresponds to a nearly chirp-free operation. With such pulses the maximum transmission capacity at λ = 1.55 μm is about 55 Gbit/s √km for a nondispersion-shifted single-mode fibre.
