Abstract
If the mitral orifice is constricted gradually it may be narrowed to a size comparable with clinical mitral stenosis. This narrowing results in a typical murmur, increased pulmonary vascular pressure, vulnerability to incomplete pulmonary ventilation, the retention of Na, and ascites formation. Creatinine and para-amino hippurate clearance and venous pressure are not markedly abnormal. Expts. indicate that the posterior pituitary and the adrenal gland may be involved in the response. Keywords
