Abstract
It has been repeatedly demonstrated in numerous commonly employed laboratory animals that acute occlusion of the portal vein by ligature is followed by death within a matter of a few minutes to an hour or so. This has led to the belief that acute occlusion of the portal vein by ligature is fatal in humans as well as in all animals. Because of the close similarity between the anatomy of the M. rhesus monkey and of the human, these animals were selected for study. In 7 animals various segments of the portal circulation (including the portal vein itself) have been subjected to acute occlusion by ligature, and to resection. All of the animals survived the procedure and are apparently in good health from 6 weeks to 6 days postoperatively. Keywords
