THE EFFECTS UPON CARDIAC MUSCULATURE OF SUBTHRESHOLD ELECTRICAL CURRENTS

Abstract
Turtle cardiac muscle was studied with respect to its changes in irritability during and following the application of various subthreshold currents. The changes found are essentially the same as those described for nerve if the time values for the latter be multiplied by a factor of about 40. The experimental findings offer explanation of the phenomena of initial and final contractions observed in cardiac muscle under the effect of continued constant current or repeated induction shocks of threshold or slightly super-threshold intensity.
