Abstract
The objective of this study was to find, using an industrially accepted technique, the urinary uranium level that best represented non-occupationally exposed persons. A review of the open literature was made, and 7 values were found giving a wide range of values for non-exposed urinary uranium levels (0.000012 mg uranium/l. ot urine to 0.026 mg/l.). Almost all of these values were developed either by analytical procedures that have been critized, by analytical procedures that are not amenable to industrial application and/or by sampling only a very small number of people. In an attempt to establish a reliable value, a statistical review was made of 1081 urinary uranium results from pre-employee urine specimens taken at the National Lead Company of Ohio during the 5-year period 1958-1962. The individual urinary uranium levels, as determined by an analytical method generally accepted for industrial application, are shown to vary over a wide range. The "raw" data in tabular and graph form and a brief statistical analysis are included. From industrial experience it is concluded that the most representative value for urinary uranium levels from non-occupationally exposed persons lies within the range of 0.005-0.007 mg/l.Keywords
