Abstract
Along with the lipids and proteins found in all cell membranes, the plasma membranes of virtually all cells are now known to contain oligosaccharides, attached to both proteins and lipids. These chains of simple sugars and aminosugars often possess highly complex — and still poorly understood — structures. Already, however, they have been implicated in such intercellular processes as recognition and adhesion. Keywords
