Plasmapheresis for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
To the Editor: The study by Dwosh et al. in the May 12 issue demonstrated that patients with moderate rheumatoid arthritis did not respond to plasmapheresis.1 However, there were several flaws in design and omissions in discussion that should be pointed out.First of all, the rationale for plasmapheresis in rheumatoid arthritis is not even mentioned. Plasmapheresis has been theorized to be beneficial either through the quantitative removal of rheumatoid factor and circulating immune complexes or through immunologic alterations induced by their removal.
